A play-by-by play of recreating The Beyond subsectors B (Liberty Hall) and C (Die Weltbund)

I'm treating these to as a unit so I can lock down a version of Die Weltbund. Multi-step process. This is not going to be easy if I want to sculpt it. I think I'm getting a hint of what McKinney wanted to do, but he was starting with an older base set; it must have been very daunting. And I can't manage this without Google. Just wonder what ads I'll get after this.

First off, a new settlement myth: sublight from Terra arriving in -123 (which matches Traveller wiki data). It works if they started a decade after the ESA and reached .3 c instead of .2 c. I put that in a background article I'm starting for governments, and made some other things match - dates for Imperial client status and details like Sternreiter ruling class and Stern-Hansa trade monopoly. Good enough for a first pass to build the pocket empire.

Next, initial colony world. Chose hex 1502 as the location and I didn't really like any versions' names, so I renamed the world Brandenburg A843735-C. It doesn't need to be the capital or highest population world, though.

Next try to match the borders. Everything in the 1991 version's Principality of Bruhkarr gets added to Die Weldbund as a first pass on the data, except the predetermined 1908 (Astana B955687-A, a Sindalian refugee world with native Gmina reduced to reservations - but I want to go back to an ancient name, like Noricum, so for Khazakstan, and old Turkish capital… Yangikent) and its colony on 1907 (was Apprati, but change to Djend) and the Aslan "deviants" on 1501 Aioaoa. Provisionally add 1904 and 2004 to round it a little.

Asteroid belt shortage: Zeitlin has one at 1908. Doesn't work with this, so instead, looking at the OTU version to try to keep the feel and given that the borders have now been shifted a bit Spinward, put the asteroid belt in the middle: 1405 and call it from the OTU (teeth grinding a little) Liebeskinder (literally Dear children. Okay, they're asteroids, I'll keep it)

Look for anomalies, first on high-pop worlds: 1102 CC62A89-A is off in so many ways. Change to  CC82532-A and make the climate hot to justify the low hydro. Instead of Arbellatra, name it Utgardar from Norse myth - capital of the land of the giants.  1604 A576955-C is high pop and in the center of the realm. A good candidate for the capital, so naming it Bundestag (just a little groan here) makes sense. Leave the stats alone. The last high pop world is 2201 Drake-Arr A876998-D, part of a small clump of worlds listed as the Drak-Arr (sic) Alliance. I'm going to expand Die Weltbund to cover five of those worlds, connected in a mini-main. The names have to go but I could steal from the OTU version… no. Call the most populous 2201 (these OTU names are troublesome, even in German. Going with German state names just seems safer) Sachsen, but drop the population to 8 and the TL to C. Next: 2102 Hesse, 2103 Bayern, 2203 Pfalz, 2301 Westfalen, all nice agricultural worlds, first two rich.  (other historical names to keep in my pocket - Rhineland|Dutch territory: Lothringen; source of some British monarchs: Hannover; derivations from the present: Saarland; Anhalt, Mecklenburg, Baden, Wurttemberg, Schleswig, Holstein, Oldenburg, Brunswick)

Next, let's pick off the non- Die Weltbund worlds: Three I've already done 1501, 1907, 1908. Two are barren 2108 Diversion and 2309 Tyren - leave as is.  That leaves nine. 2305 was a Sn* world, so drop the starport by one, reroll gov and law and adjust tech: B7536BE-8 - Amber Zone for sure. Name, not OTUs Queen Maud's Land, so use OTU's Morphy from 2304. Now, the rest are a mixed bag of generally crappy worlds. Leave as is 0905 and 1006. 1106 Stopover is close to the OTU 1207 Liberty Hall, so I'm going to call it that, but keep the crappy physical stats and add the OTU population and gov, drop the law to 0, up port and tech: B311320-C and make it a gas giant satellite: instant freeport. We have 2107 "Sailor' Rest" [sic] and 2308 Rest Stop. Stats are fine, the later I rolled as a cold moon so it gets to be Queen Maud's Land, the former gets the OTU name of Zeben and gets absorbed into Die Weltbund with a Naval Base. 2207 Kao, cute, another name for a rest stop if you capitalize it; I'll have Die Weldbund absorb it as Ilse. Finally, 2402 Genetics and 2403 Breeding. Only thing wrong is their names. Back to OTU: 2402 Alekhine (an assassinated chess master?) and Macchu Picchu? That's a bit much, so let's look at an Inca ruler... Tupac? There's no Tupac anywhere in the OTU. That seems wrong, so 2403 Tupac it is.

Now I have 20 more Die Weltbund worlds to review. Three are barren. Well, if German rocket scientist is the theme, lets do Von Braun, Oberth, Ley (the last is a faraway sector name, but they wouldn't know that. Or care.) Kick the starports of all to E.  The rest we'll do by population, starting high. 1901 Ongjoco: an almost industrial world. Pulling from the German state pool: Saarland. 1104 Kursor: I rolled as tropical… derailed thinking about German beaches gets me to… Peenemünde (drop the umlaut). 1503 Yaple: not that lovely, so pick… Anhalt. 1307 Braga: government is E, so change to 3 and roll law as 2; exotic atmosphere, rolled as a moon, Perry Rhodan popped into my head: Rhodan. 1409 Chubbuck: too dry to be agricultural, but rich… spa.... Baden. 1701 Pingue: crappy little world only technically agricultural… grab the OTU name Quatsch; it means 'nonsense'. Okay 1306 Knife Blade: an Alien world, originally TL 5 with a population in the missions, physical is 733, so what did Die Weltbund do to them? Needs a writeup in any case. I decided to do a reaction roll, got a 7, so indifference... I'm going to call that quarantine and decide Die Weltbund follows a Prime Directive (maybe only because the world wasn't much value or the aliens hostile and hard to exterminate) and stick with a Red Zone and the original alien stats. World becomes NaXX. Name... nothing sticks… bad world? Schlechtwelt. Might change it after it write up the aliens. Next up 1401 Tejcek, a Garden world with a class A starport, so gets a naval base and… Lothringen. 1403 Reis: another garden world, lower tech… Oldenburg. 1802 Balleau: Small, moon, ag, balkanized… makes me think of split Berlin, but that's too big so a subdivision… Spandau. 1002 Dragonrest: a garden world, not many people, low tech, on the edge of the realm… kick it out, make it neutral, leave the name. 1103 Ixchel: Frozen, thin atmosphere: German claim in Antarctica was Neuschwabenland, but remove the land. 1308 Huhn's Planet: Larger, dry, but standard atmosphere… Brunswick. 1609 Maruta: Small dusty world… Holstein. 1709 Degmann: Poor, cold world… Thule. 1505 Probst's Planet: tiny cold world, pull Nervenheilanstalt from the OTU pile, it means 'mental home'. 2004 Escobarre: size 1 rockball… Gauss - name of a ship from a German Antarctic expedition… and a weapon we all like.

As a finishing touch, I like the idea of the OTU Tartakover, a desert client state at the end of the Imperial communications line. So, I'm just going to copy that world into that currently blank hex as is. The name… apparently from another chess master, but we'll assume it was a more recent person for the purposes of the write-up.  Give it a scout base.

Now stars. Copy from OTU B and C subsectors. There are 25 F primaries and only 2 Ks, so all the Fs will get examined and at least half will become Ks or Ms (especially those with habitable planets which are F4 or less). New count: 6 F, 6 G, 13 K, 19 M.  That's better. But distribution depends heavily on which version of the rules did the generation. One version was way heavy on F, because I've seen it in other sectors. A true distribution would be about 75% M, 15% K, 5% G, 3 F% and the rest a rounding error, but that's only main sequence. About 15% of stars are white dwarfs and the true brown dwarf count is hard to determine; There may be as many as Ms.  This distribution also skews to all the secondary stars being Ms, so to tweak that, of the 19 double systems, I'm going to make 3 D and 3 BD.  I'll have to nit similarly through the four subsectors I already did, but not this instant.
